I saw him play in Manchester Opera House on his first date in England in 15 years and although he’s pushing on seventy four, he’s still in top form. On stage for around three hours he appeared humble and gracious for this chance to play. Leonard was strikingly honest when he addressed the audience about his own money troubles, and thanking everyone for overcoming “financial and geographical obstacles”. Each song he played you could hear with resounding clarity, and with such fire and passion.
Backed with an amazing array of musicians, including two British backing singers (The Webb Sisters) from Kent they made great songs, even better for the live platform. His humor also has to be mentioned, when the standing ovation greeted him, he pleaded for everyone to sit down for it was making him nervous that everyone would leave, and his final song titled ‘I Tried To Leave You’ – “Goodnight, my darling, I hope you’re satisfied, the bed is kind of narrow, but my arms are open wide. And here’s a man still working for your smile.”
Leonard Cohen is a true living legend, and long may he continue to do so.
